The story behind BOU.
Hi there,
I'm Isabel, founder of BOU - very happy to see you here.
Just a few weeks ago, I decided it was time to combine my passion for fashion with purpose and intention.
After cancer struck me for the second time at 21, I learned the hard way that your health is your greatest gift.
I LOVE fashion—but I don't want it to make me sick.
Chemical fabrics like polyester, nylon, acrylic harm your health, the environment, and animals. Daily toxins, hormone disruptors, and chemicals in clothing raise cancer risks most people aren't even aware of.
When I discovered the truth about these materials, I knew it was time to take materials more seriously. That's why BOU insists on a zero polyester policy, working only with natural fabrics.
And no, it's not easy—but good things take time (and energy, effort, and HARD work).
Because everyone deserves timeless pieces that feel AND look good—this shouldn't be an either/or decision.
Today, almost 4 years cancer-free, I feel happier and healthier than ever.
Now, I'm excited to follow my dream: creating my conscious slow fashion movement.
A movement starts with awareness. You can eat healthy, go to the gym, and be mindful of what you put IN your body, but if you don't pay attention to what you put ON your body every day, you're missing a very important factor.
BOU is short for Boudewijn, my dad, who unfortunately passed away in 2015.
Boudewijn was a remarkable man: eccentric, kind, adventurous, smart, creative. He was most in his element surrounded by the elements: sailing on the water or lighting campfires.
He taught me to cherish nature, travel, and adventure.
I see him in beautiful things: the sun, the stars, waves, campfires, and water lilies.
BOU honors him.
I've put all my character, love, time, energy, and soul into BOU.
I want BOU to be something not only he and I, but also my younger self and future children can be proud of:
something that actually contributes positively to the world, instead of just taking from it.
It’s time to take responsibility for problems we didn't create.
Will you be part of the problem, or the solution?
I invite you to join a movement you'll be proud to be part of and watch my vision become reality.
Lots of love,
Meike Isabel 🦋
